IPTO actively participated in the 7th International Conference on Smart Energy Systems and Technologies (SEST 2024) which this year was held in Torino, Italy, on 10-12 September 2024. Dr. Kyriaki-Nefeli Malamaki presented the paper entitled “Optimal Short-Term Dispatch of Insular Systems: the Case of Ikaria” in the framework of SINNOGENES project. This paper is a collaborative work among the two Electricity Operators of Greece, the Hellenic Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) and the Transmission System Operator (IPTO), as well as two Research Centres, CERTH and CIRCE.

The paper presents a day-ahead optimal dispatch strategy for the island of Ikaria where a Hybrid Power Plant (HPP) consisting of three Wind Turbines (WTs) and a hydropump storage (HPS) is installed. However, currently there is limited exploitation of the HPP due to its current operating mode. The aim of this study is to construct an optimization framework considering operational aspects and CO2 emissions with particular emphasis on the HPS and thermal unit modelling so as to lift the barriers for the operators and help to increase the Renewable Energy Sources penetration, to minimize the local CO2 emissions, to optimize islands interconnection management, and ultimately to transform Ikaria into a paradigm insular system with respect to its short-term dispatch and control operation.
