The Portuguese pilot, Demo Site #1, aims at demonstrating how energy storage can help decarbonize industrial energy consumption and maximize the use of local renewable energy sources (RES). Located in Maia within the Porto Metropolitan Area, this industrial park includes office buildings, a chipboard factory, and the refrigeration systems of a logistics hub. It also serves as the headquarters of CapWatt, an energy services company with over nine years of experience, leading this demo pilot.
The demo case underscores the critical need for sustainable energy solutions in industrial settings, addressing both environmental and economic challenges. The key objectives of the demonstrator include:
- Decarbonization of industrial processes by reducing the site’s reliance on fossil fuels, through the integration of RES and advanced energy storage technologies.
- Leveraging renewable energy generation by maximizing the use of locally generated renewable energy to enhance self-sufficiency and reduce carbon footprint.
- Deploying and exploring innovative storage solutions, including redox flow batteries and thermal energy storage (TES), to improve energy management and system flexibility.
- Exploring complementary services by leveraging the combined management of the available generation and storage assets to offer reserve services to the Distribution System Operator (DSO) and/or Transmission System Operator (TSO) and equipping the demonstrator with black start and islanding operation capabilities.
